I got my start designing race- and sportscars at KLK Motorsport. A dream job for any hot-blooded aerospace engineer and car enthusiast. During my time as an aerodynamicist and mechanical engineer, I got to work on a host of very exciting machines. These included supercars, rally cars, touring cars, concept cars and even hydrofoil yachts.
This is when I also realised that software is eating the world. The limiting factor in designing better machines was not our understanding of mechanical design principles but the power of the tools at our disposal. The teams with better processes and software tools invariably understood their designs better and could, therefore, make better judgements on how to proceed.
One of the first products I developed was kviz, a viewer to analyse flow fields with greater ease and flexibility. Building this tool was an incredible experience for me. In which field can you conceive something completely new and build it from the ground up with such speed and limited resources? I was hooked!
Switching careers is hard, but after immersing myself in the material for a few years, I managed to make the jump into the software industry. After starting as a Software engineer, I transitions into Product Management. Currently, I am responsible for search relevance at Autoscout24, introducing “learning to rank” machine learning models to sort search results.
This eclectic career path clearly shows me to be a generalist, with many interests. This has served me well and always stimulated me to learn more. The one constant is that I want to design and build great products.
